I’m sure all you Tumblr users have heard by now about the changes being made to Tumblr’s ecosystem so that the site can make more money. And I’m sure most of you are as uneasy as I am or, in fact, are angry about the proposed changes.

The reason they need to make more money is simple: Tumblr is $30 million USD in debt.

For this site to run and for them to pay employees, the site needs to generate revenue.

This place maybe a hellsite but it’s our hellsite. We are still here because we actually like it here. Besides, the other social media sites are crashing or will crash soon. Where else would we go?

Now, I did some research. There are at least 300 million users and over 500 million blogs. One of the cheapest things to buy on the Tumblr store is the crab package you can gift to another blog, which is $3 USD.

If each and everyone of us buys a crab package, we get to keep Tumblr alive and kicking. @oracleoutlook suggested that we make a holiday of it on July 29th. It seems to have resonated with people. Others have also asked for that to extend to August 5th, as some people don’t get paid til the beginning of the month.

Many people have already agreed to celebrate July 29th as Crab Day, a day of posting crab memes and gifting crabs to other users. And if you cannot afford to buy crabs, that is a-okay! Participate in the crab memes. Who would pass up the chance to make and reblog memes about crabs, after all?

This hellsite is ours. Let us remind them of that.

okay then lets do this.

Sorry: no. You can’t just guess at a corporation’s motives like this and decide you’ve found the answer.

Firms exist to profit-maximize, not to break even. If tumblr’s userbase buys enough crabs to get the hellsite out of debt, the people who make these business decisions have exactly no incentive to stop making further changes. It does not follow that “we give them enough to pay off debt” leads to “they pay off their debt” leads to “they decide they don’t still need to make these changes to target a group of users not currently on the site.” We can give them money and maybe they decide to take on *more* debt to finance *more* infrastructure changes. This might be preferable for their investors if the projected revenue from an investment is high enough. You give them money, they say “oh hooray, money!” And that’s the end of the conversation. You don’t know what they’ll do next.

Do not mistake this grassroots campaign for a negotiation. Corporate Tumblr is under no obligation to do what you want. They haven’t agreed to take any specific action if they got out of debt, and even if they did, there’s no mechanism in place to support that agreement.

Buy crabs if you want to buy crabs, but please don’t mistake this action by itself as something that could make Tumblr stay the way we want it to stay.

Also OP is a far right transphobe js

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we’re using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.

The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience.

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content.

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

  1. Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.
  2. Provide high-quality content with every app launch.
  3. Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.
  4. Retain and grow our creator base.
  5. Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.
  6. Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

If you take away the main feed and force an algorithm onto all feeds, you WILL lose more people. I have stuck by this hellsite since the beginning but if you take away my nice, comfy, curated, time organized dashboard, I WILL leave. As will many others.

Why don’t you just listen to your fucking users for once. Literally bringing back porn will bring in so many users. Especially with twitter on the fucking downfall and it being really the only social media left allowing nsfw content. Legit anyone can tell you this. Why do you think other websites are failing? Why do you think we choose this website? BECAUSE THERE’S NO FUCKING ALGORITHM. and the algorithms you do bring are HORRIBLE.

Like this site survives because it’s NOT like other social media.

also fucking

“Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread.”
Yeah, we had that. Then you took away the ability to click on specific fucking posts in the reblog chain. YOU made it harder. And we’ve all been demanding for that to be undone and you IGNORE US.

LEARN FROM OTHER WEBSITE’S FAILURES. IGNORING YOUR USERS KILLS YOUR WEBSITE.

“Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. “
What the fuck does this mean? That we won’t be able to see the reblog threads that we’re specifically reblogging for. Half the time I’m not reblogging for the main post, but for the ADDITIONS. There are so many posts I scroll by, read the additions and then reblog. Like seriously, explain what this even means.

“ Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.   “
Yeah the reason for that is because you constantly fuck over your creative base. You make things harder CONSTANTLY for the rp community which is a large number of users. You lost so many artists because of the dumbass porn ban. Like reversing that alone would do SO MUCH. “Go nuts, show nuts” was from the start. Taking that away was literally the biggest mistake this website has ever made and the fact that you IGNORE THAT and refuse to compromise CONTINUES TO HURT YOU.

“ The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”) “
IF YOU INTRODUCE AN ALGORITHM TO MY FUCKING FOLLOWING FEED I WILL LEAVE. MANY OF US WILL LEAVE. We will either leave or someone will make ANOTHER extension to get rid of this braindead idea. The following tab is FOR PEOPLE I FOLLOW. And I actually fucking use the “For you” almost exclusively on mobile and the “following” on browser.

“ It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. “
“feel safe”
cool so you gonna do anything about the rampant transphobia and racism on the website? no?
“In control of their experience”
algorithms do the fucking opposite of that

“ The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. “
Yeah because you never address bugs. We have to constantly complain and shit from years ago is still fucked up.

Literally all the replies are telling you they use tumblr BECAUSE THERE IS NO ALGORITHM.

Fucking listen to your users. For fucking ONCE. Or risk losing them.

Hey man, went to the Columbus Zoo today for the first time! They had this lovely normal pattern reticulated python in the Asian indoor exhibit for the longest time, then I suspect it passed away before the last few times I visited, as the enclosure was empty. Not today! I saw this absolute beauty... And thought it was an albino at first, until I saw that the eyes weren't red!

I was wondering if you could perhaps identify what morph this new retic might be? And here's the zoo's komodo dragon, as a treat

That’s a lovely purple phase albino. Albino retics don’t have bright red eyes like most other albino snakes will! Retics tend to have light-colored eyes no matter their morph, and albino retic eyes are usually orange-ish.

image

That’s true even for more typical albino retics!

Yep, Columbus Zoo regular here! We had this gorgeous girl and also a larger regular retic who recently was euthanized after health issues. Her name was Jackie and she was 18 feet and had been with us since 2019, there’s a FB post about her health issues.

Our newer girl is named Kami and is a big cutie.

Yeah, I figured she was put down recently. I didn’t know her name was Jackie, though, and thought she’d been with the zoo much longer than 2019. I made a mistake in my original ask (I’m the asker, you can check the bio to be sure), in that it was actually my first time going to the zoo myself, lol.

All of the retics I’ve seen at the zoo previous had been wild types, so it’s really interesting that they put a pretty unique morph in the exhibit instead. Not that I’m complaining, Kami is adorable!

We used to have Fluffy, who was the largest snake in captivity (at the time, I don’t know if that record has been broken since her passing), then we had Hanna, then Jackie. Fluffy I know was age related, I don’t remember if Hanna was age or health, and then Jackie was health related.

And yeah it’s really cool seeing a non wild morph in a zoo. Like we’ve had some morphs in the reptile building but I believe all of them were ones that could occur in the wild (like a super dark rattlesnake, though one of our current rat snakes might be a more captive bred morphs.)

Not sure on Kami’s story but it does make me wonder if she was an owner surrender/confiscation by the state/etc. She is gorgeous tho and I always love seeing her.

🌟 New

  • Love those important checkmarks? We won a Webby for ’em!
  • The inbox unread count has returned on web! No more unread dot.
  • We’re no longer creating activity items in your activity feed when you like, reblog, or reply to your own posts.
  • In the new post editor on web, clicking into the tags input field will now show suggestions immediately.
  • Passwords on Tumblr have a max length of 72 bytes. This has actually always been the case, but now we’re making that clearer when setting your password across web, iOS, and Android.

🛠 Fixed

  • Users that you’ve blocked will no longer appear in Tumblr Live carousels.
  • Ask/answer posts can no longer be blazed at all. (We’re thinking through how best to ask for consent from the asker and answerer, so this may return.)
  • Fixed a bug that was resetting a post’s blaze eligibility depending on where it was being edited. Thanks to everyone who sent us info about this issue, it helped us track down the problem faster!
  • Fixed the issue that could cause the new post editor on web to not be able to redo your actions after undoing them with Control + Z.
  • When using Tumblr in a browser on your phone, going “back” from within a direct messaging conversation will now bring you back to the right place, if you got to that conversation from places like activity or your dashboard.
  • There was an issue with Spotify podcast embeds for a brief period this week, but they’ve fixed the issue.

🚧 Ongoing

  • The war against spam bots continues. We’re working to clean up recent waves of spam bots, and again prevent them from recurring. As usual, please report any blogs as spam that you find, and we’ll take care of the rest.
  • We’re working on separating everyone’s existing checkmarks into separate blue and rainbow products, and opening up the ability for everyone to manage which one is being displayed next to their blog name. There have been some bumps with this transition, but we’re working them out as quickly as possible!
  • Version 29.1.1 of the Tumblr Android app has a fix for the issue of the app switching to the “For you” tab when interacting with posts that have a “Read more”.

🌱 Upcoming

  • We’re working on a design refresh of the direct messaging conversation popup on web.

Experiencing an issue? File a Support Request and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!
